Shania Montúfar is a second year Ph.D. student in Sociology, specializing in Demography, at the University of Texas at Austin and a visual artist.
She is a first-generation Ecuadorian-Colombian-American from Tulsa, Oklahoma who grew up in rural Missouri. Shania was the first Latinx student government president at Truman State University, where she founded the first LGBTQ+ resource center in Northeast Missouri.
Shania is a former Ronald E. McNair and University of Michigan SROP scholar as well as being a current Point Foundation Scholar , Health Policy Research Scholar, and Hispanic Scholarship Fund Scholar.
Shania is a population researcher and photographer who centers migrant and LGBTQ+ stories. She has presented research at the American Sociologial Association, Population Association of America, and Midwestern Sociological Society.
